Online Brand Abuse is a Cybersecurity Issue

Online Brand Abuse is a Cybersecurity Issue

Security Boulevard July 22, 2022

Over the last two years, there has been a huge shift in the way consumers and users engage with businesses, with a significantly heavier emphasis on online activities and presence. Businesses are paying attention to these changes, but so are cybercriminals and other malicious actors, resulting in an understandable increase in internet-based crimes and infringers looking to abuse trusted brands and their reputations. This can lead to consumers losing confidence in these brands and derailing the interactions meant for the trusted organizations, resulting in lost revenue and business opportunities.

In an effort to pounce on the low levels of baby formula issue, data from a global assessment of domain registrations since 2021 show 84 percent of baby formula-related domains were registered by third parties. The rise in fake registrations coincides with the turbulent supply chain issues the industry experienced this year, and registration characteristics appear designed to end up as attack vehicles, according to a report by CSC. CSC’s research shows 95 percent of domains registered in the same time period are tied to third parties. This assessment is part of CSC’s latest report, “Where Domain Security Meets the Supply Chain Crunch.”

Security Boulevard July 13, 2022

A report published by CSC revealed a spike in fake domain registrations from entities attempting to leverage the ongoing shortages of baby formula and semiconductors to conduct phishing attacks and perpetrate fraud. The report found an 84% increase in baby formula-related domains registered by third parties since January of 2021 and a 95% increase in similar semiconductor industry-related domains. CSC also reported that of these domains, 26% of baby formula-related and 44% of semiconductor-related domains are configured with MX email records, a mechanism widely used by cybercriminals to disseminate phishing emails.
