EURid Begins Final Phase Out of Greek IDN

Eurid, the registry for .eu domains, announced two corresponding moves relating to Greek IDNs. IDN.eu domains with Greek characters will be phased out of existence, while the registry also launches a entirely Greek IDN extension, .ευ (.xn--qxa6a). This action follows a similar phase out of Cyrillic IDN.eu domains that began in 2016 and completed June 2019. Starting November 14, 2019, .ευ domains will be available for registration to the general public in a first-come, first serve release. The new extension will follow the standard regulations of .eu domains. Registrations for this new IDN.IDN version of eu will only allow the use of Greek characters. At the same time as the launch of .ευ, the registry will begin a 3 year Script Adjustment Phase to eliminate existing Greek IDN.eu domains. EURid will fully enforce the basic rule that the second level script must match the top-level script. The registry will clone existing Greek IDN.eu domains to the corresponding Greek IDN.IDN version of the domain and reserve the domain for registration by the current registrant. After November 13, 2022, .ευ domains not registered by the Registrant for which the domain was reserved will be released for registration by any eligible registrant.
