This past weekend, the issue gained momentum at the Certification Authority Browser Forum when more detail was discussed following the proposed ballot to set a timeline for shorter lifetime certificates by Apple<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This creates real urgency for organizations of all sizes to seriously consider and implement automation into their certificate life cycle management. \u201cBut it\u2019s just a proposal,\u201d I hear! Yes, currently, it\u2019s just a proposal subject to further discussion and then a ballot. But even if the ballot fails to pass it, it\u2019s highly likely that Apple or Google<sup>\u00ae<\/sup> will make it policy anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at the timeline:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Timeframe<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Life cycle for certificates<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Domain control validation re-use period<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td>After September 2025<\/td><td>200-day certificates<\/td><td>DCV re-use 200 days<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>After September 2026<\/td><td>100-day certificates<\/td><td>DCV re-use 100 days<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>After April 2027<\/td><td>45-day certificates<\/td><td>DCV re-use 45 days<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>After September 2027<\/td><td>45-day certificates<\/td><td>DCV re-use 10 days<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>This may seem complex at first, but the life cycles follow a simple logic of ideal certificate term, plus an early renewal window:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>200 days = 180 days (six months) + 20 days early renewal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>100 days = 90 days (three months) + 10 days early renewal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>45 days = 42 days (six weeks) + three days early renewal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that previous predictions that we\u2019d see 90-day certificates come into effect in 2025 is not realized in this proposal\u2014it suggests 180-day certificates next year, with 90-day certificates not coming into effect until 2026. It\u2019s good news insomuch as there\u2019s slightly more time to get your digital ducks in a row. But only <em>slightly <\/em>more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gradual decrease in certificate life cycles undoubtedly causes a headache for busy IT security teams\u2014and a headache that will only get worse without certificate automation. Organizations with manual tracking and monitoring methods simply will not be able to cope with hundreds (or even thousands) of certificates expiring at different times. Missed certificate renewals = unencrypted sites = security risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Automate, automate, automate!<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By September 2027, your current renewal workload will have increased eight-fold\u2014organizations can\u2019t really afford to adopt a wait-and-see approach. To automate certificate renewals, you first need to see if your current web servers are Automated Certificate Management Environment (ACME) compatible. Our secure sockets layer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscdbs.com\/en\/domain-security\/ssl-certificate-management\/ssl-automation\/#inlineLeadCollector\">SSL) automation checklist<\/a> can help you assess whether your current SSL set up is compatible for automation.
