{"id":155,"date":"2010-06-09T13:03:08","date_gmt":"2010-06-09T13:03:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.domainandtrademark.com\/?p=155"},"modified":"2019-08-09T09:12:09","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T13:12:09","slug":"internationalized-domain-names-idns-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cscdbs.com\/blog\/internationalized-domain-names-idns-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To enable more global participation on the Web, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and technical community, along with country-code (ccTLD) and generic Top-Level Domain (gTLD) registries, have spent the last several years completing policy and technical implementation work to allow non-English speaking registrants to obtain domain name registrations in non-Latin scripts and characters, such as Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese and Hindi.<\/p>\n<p>Below is a summary of the most recent 2<sup>nd<\/sup> level (before \u201cthe dot\u201d) IDN opportunities of which you should be aware:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>.SG (Singapore)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nOn May 6, 2010, the Sunrise Phase for Trademark holders for IDN.SG (Chinese ONLY) closed.\u00a0 On June 9, 2010, CSC anticipates successful IDN.SG Sunrise applications will be activated by the .SG Registry and available for use.\u00a0 IDN.SG Landrush will begin on June 10, 2010 and IDN.SG names will be awarded on a First Come, First Served basis from that point forward.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>.TEL<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nBeginning on June 15, 2010, Telnic (.TEL Registry) will make available .TEL IDNs in the following languages: Chinese, Danish, Finnish, German, Hungarian, Icelandic, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish.\u00a0 All registrations will be on a first-come, first served basis.\u00a0 There will be no Sunrise period for trademark holders for this launch.\u00a0 One (1) and two (2) character IDN.TEL domains will be available for registration.<\/p>\n<p>For priority handling of your IDN.TEL registration request, orders must be placed with CSC by 2pm EDT on June 14, 2010.<\/p>\n<p>.<strong><em>NZ (New Zealand)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe .NZ Registry has begun to offer IDNs with macronised vowels (\u0101, \u0113, \u012b, \u014d and \u016b) which are featured in the M\u0101ori language, an official language under New Zealand law.\u00a0 The Sunrise phase of the launch commenced on April 6, 2010 and will expire on July 6, 2010.\u00a0 During Sunrise, only those with existing .NZ names may register M\u0101ori IDN variants of their existing .NZ name(s).<\/p>\n<p>For priority handling of your IDN.NZ registration request, orders must be placed with CSC by 12 pm EDT on July 1, 2010.<\/p>\n<p>First come, first served IDN.NZ registration of domain names with macronised vowels will begin on July 26, 2010.\u00a0 M\u0101ori (with the \u201c\u0101\u201d macron) will be added to the list of allowed second level domain names (2LDs) at this time as well. Both .m\u0101ori.nz and .maori.nz will be valid 2LDs. All existing and future names registered under .maori.nz will be duplicated in the DNS to be available under .m\u0101ori.nz as well.<\/p>\n<p>Significant effort by ICANN and country-code registries has also been undertaken over the last several years to enable IDNs after \u201cthe dot\u201d (often referred to as IDN ccTLDs\/Fast Track IDNs) so that an entire domain name (brand.TLD) can be registered in a non-Latin script.\u00a0 Below is a summary of recent availability and activity regarding these types of IDNs:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Russian Federation<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>&#8211; .RF (.\u0440\u0444)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe Russian Federation began launch activities for .\u0440\u0444 in November 2009 when it submitted its application for the IDN version of .RF to ICANN as part of the IDN ccTLD Fast Track Process.\u00a0 The 1<sup>st<\/sup> Sunrise Phase, reserved for those with Trademarks in Cyrillic only, concluded on May 11, 2010.\u00a0 The remaining Sunrise Phases are as follow:<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" width=\"518\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"290\" valign=\"top\"><strong>Phase<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"96\" valign=\"top\"><strong>Start\u00a0 Date<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"132\" valign=\"top\"><strong>End   date<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"290\" valign=\"top\">Sunrise   for Trademarks in Latin and Cyrillic characters or in Latin script only<\/td>\n<td width=\"96\" valign=\"top\">May 12, 2010<\/td>\n<td width=\"132\" valign=\"top\">September 16, 2010<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"290\" valign=\"top\">Sunrise   for trade names<\/td>\n<td width=\"96\" valign=\"top\">July 15, 2010<\/td>\n<td width=\"132\" valign=\"top\">September 16, 2010<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"290\" valign=\"top\">Sunrise   for Geographical indications of goods origin<\/td>\n<td width=\"96\" valign=\"top\">July 15, 2010<\/td>\n<td width=\"132\" valign=\"top\">September 16, 2010<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"290\" valign=\"top\">Sunrise   for non-profit organizations<\/td>\n<td width=\"96\" valign=\"top\">July 15, 2010<\/td>\n<td width=\"132\" valign=\"top\">September 16, 2010<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"290\" valign=\"top\">Sunrise   for Mass Media<\/td>\n<td width=\"96\" valign=\"top\">July 15, 2010<\/td>\n<td width=\"132\" valign=\"top\">September 16, 2010<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>For the current Sunrise Phase, Trademarks in Latin and Cyrillic characters or in Latin script only, the domain name must exactly match the trademark.\u00a0 If the trademark being used as the basis of the domain name application is in a script other than all Cyrillic, the trademark must be translated into Cyrillic entirely and only an exactly matching Cyrillic domain name application may be submitted.<\/p>\n<p>For the upcoming Sunrise Phase for Trade Names<strong> <\/strong>beginning on July 15, 2010, please be advised that only Russian organizations are eligible. All applications during this phase must be accompanied by a special extract from the Organization Registry provided by the Russian Tax Department.\u00a0 This extract needs to be issued no later than twenty (20) calendar days prior to submitting the application.<\/p>\n<p>CSC is currently accepting .\u0440\u0444 orders.\u00a0 CSC continues to await further information from the Russian Federation on the exact timing of the Landrush Phase for .\u0440\u0444, however, this phase is expected to take place sometime during the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> or 4<sup>th<\/sup> quarter of 2010.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Saudi Arabia<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> &#8211; .<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>ALSAUDIAH<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> (.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0639\u0648\u062f\u064a\u0629<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nOn May 5, 2010,. ALSAUDIAH (.\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0639\u0648\u062f\u064a\u0629), was one (1) of the first three (3) IDN ccTLDs to be delegated to the root servers by ICANN.\u00a0 As a result, SaudiNIC, the .\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0639\u0648\u062f\u064a\u0629 Registry, has announced the following launch schedule for registrations:<\/p>\n<p>Sunrise (May 31, 2010 \u2013 July 12, 2010) \u2013 The Registry (SaudiNIC) shall begin acceptance of applications for the registration of Arabic domain names from qualified registrants.\u00a0 A qualified registrant is an entity who has a registered trade name or trademark with the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n<p>Landrush (September 27, 2010) \u2013 SaudiNIC shall begin accepting applications for registration of Arabic domain names from members of the general public on a first come, first served basis.<\/p>\n<p>During Sunrise registration, the domain name applied for must exactly match the trade name listed on the Company Registration Certificate (CRC) or Trademark (TM) on file with the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Saudi Arabia.\u00a0 The TM or CRC on file must be in the Arabic language (without alternation, abbreviation or translation) and all applications must conform with all terms and conditions of Arabic Domain Name Registration Regulation and other SaudiNIC\u2019s related regulations and procedures.\u00a0 Furthermore, the registrant of the domain name must match the owner listed on the corresponding trade name or trademark on the CRC or TM Certificate.\u00a0 Domain names must also contain a minimum of 3 characters\/symbols and at least 2 servers must be pre-configured for each name domain name submitted.<\/p>\n<p>CSC is currently accepting .\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0639\u0648\u062f\u064a\u0629\u00a0 orders.\u00a0 We are still awaiting final Landrush rules from the SaudiNic and will apprise clients of those requirements once they become available.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>United Arab Emirates<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> &#8211; .EMARAT (.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u0627\u0645\u0627\u0631\u0627\u062a<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nAnother of the first three (3) IDN ccTLDs to be delegated to the root servers by ICANN on May 5, 2010 was EMARAT (.\u0627\u0645\u0627\u0631\u0627\u062a).\u00a0 As a result, aeDA, the .\u0627\u0645\u0627\u0631\u0627\u062a Registry announced the following launch schedule in late May:<\/p>\n<p>Phase I &#8211; Governmental Institutions (May 30, 2010 \u2013 September 26, 2010):\u00a0 This phase shall be specialized for governmental institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Phase II \u2013 Trademarks (September 27, 2010 \u2013 October 22, 2010):\u00a0 This phase is for owners of trademarks registered in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and any other Arab country.\u00a0 Priority will be granted to the holders of UAE trademark registrations.\u00a0 Qualifying UAE trademarks can be in either Latin or Arabic characters, however, if the trademark being used as the basis of the domain name application is in Latin, the trademark must be translated into Arabic and only an exactly matching Arabic domain name application may be submitted<\/p>\n<p>Phase III \u2013 Landrush\/Generic (November 15, 2010 \u2013 November 19, 2010):\u00a0 This phase is for the distinctive names, namely descriptive or commonly used names, such as \u201chotels.emarat\u201d \u201crestaurants.emarat\u201d \u201cfood.emarat\u201d , etc\u2026(in Arabic translation). Registrants must demonstrate and tender proof that there is a relationship between themselves\/their company and the name applied.\u00a0 In situations where multiple applications are received for a specific name, qualified applicants will compete for the name through an auction process.<\/p>\n<p>Phase IV \u2013 General Availability (December 11, 2010):\u00a0 Registration shall be opened for the general public.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Egypt<\/em><\/strong><strong><em> &#8211; .MISR (.<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u0645\u0635\u0631<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>)<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nOn May 5, 2010, the 3<sup>rd<\/sup> IDN ccTLD to be delegated to the root servers by ICANN was .MISR (.\u0645\u0635\u0631).\u00a0 CSC is currently awaiting launch details and complete rules from Egypt.\u00a0 Once we receive this information we will make it available to our clients.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em><br \/>\nAdditional IDN ccTLD Implementations<\/em><\/strong><br \/>\nThe following nine (9) countries have applied for an IDN ccTLD, which are expected to be delegated into the root servers by ICANN within the next couple of months:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>China<\/li>\n<li>Hong Kong<\/li>\n<li>Jordan<\/li>\n<li>Palestinian  Territory<\/li>\n<li>Qatar<\/li>\n<li>Sri   Lanka<\/li>\n<li>Taiwan<\/li>\n<li>Thailand<\/li>\n<li>Tunisia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Furthermore, ICANN has received eight (8) additional IDN ccTLD applications that are currently undergoing string evaluation.\u00a0 The name of each country who has submitted an application will not be released by ICANN until it successfully passed string evaluation and recommended for delegation.\u00a0 CSC will continue to monitor these developments and will share information about upcoming IDN ccTLD launches as it becomes available.<\/p>\n<p>Please be advised that IDN registration can provide corporations with the ability to connect with new global customers and build greater global brand awareness without the need for brick and mortar presence.\u00a0 However, the proliferation of IDNs will also cause new budget and brand protection challenges.\u00a0 CSC clients are strongly recommended to contact their CSC
