{"id":16069,"date":"2026-10-08T09:10:32","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T13:10:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cscdbs.com\/blog\/?p=16069"},"modified":"2026-10-19T08:39:34","modified_gmt":"2026-10-19T12:39:34","slug":"icanns-new-gtld-program-reveal-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cscdbs.com\/blog\/icanns-new-gtld-program-reveal-day\/","title":{"rendered":"ICANN\u2019s New gTLD Program: Reveal Day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After an intense year of writing and submitting applications, yesterday was Reveal Day for ICANN\u2019s New gTLD Program: 2026 Round, giving us the full list of applied-for top-level domains (TLDs) for the very first time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The headlines<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Overall, there were <strong>1,663 applications submitted<\/strong>, with <strong>1,615 of those confirmed to proceed<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Of those proceeding, there are <strong>986 unique strings<\/strong>, with <strong>263 contention sets<\/strong>.<a href=\"#_ftn1\" id=\"_ftnref1\"><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>most popular string is .agent<\/strong>, with 13 applications, closely followed by <strong>.bit<\/strong>, with 11.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1514\" height=\"690\" src=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/2026\/10\/Reveal-day-graphic-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16085\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2.1920289855072466\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Most applications<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The top three companies by number of TLD applications are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"599\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/2026\/10\/Reveal-day-graphic-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16083\" style=\"aspect-ratio:2.2185185185185183;width:599px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>.BRAND TLDs<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Organizations remain keen to own their own piece of the internet, with 20% of all applications being for .BRANDs. The remaining 80% are for open TLDs, including geographical and community TLDs. In the 2012 round, a third of all applications were for .BRANDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"982\" height=\"192\" src=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/2026\/10\/Reveal-day-graphic-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16084\" style=\"aspect-ratio:5.1138211382113825;width:629px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Categories to watch<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2012, 35% of applied-for TLDs fell into the technology and IT category. These industries were naturally early adopters of new gTLDs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time around, crypto, AI, and quantum emerged as popular categories for TLDs, with .crypto (five applications), .llm (two applications), and .quantum (four applications) appearing. Their increase in popularity and relevance since the first round supports this prevalence in the applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Updated timeline<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/newgtldprogram-aps.icann.org\/applications\">application list<\/a> is now public. But between now and mid-November, there will be movement in this list as contention sets are identified, replacement strings are chosen, or applications are withdrawn altogether.<br \/><br \/><strong>String Confirmation Day on November 17, 2026<\/strong>, will provide us with an updated list of strings and contention sets going forward. Other key dates are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>From November 17, 2026\u2014community input and objection period<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Est. first half of 2027\u2014prioritization draw and evaluation results<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>March 16, 2027\u2014objection period ends<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Est. June 2027\u2014contention resolution complete<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get ready<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new TLDs will officially launch in 2028. In the meantime, some preparatory work can be done:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Spend time auditing your domain portfolio to understand your current domain landscape.
