More than 100 businesses and organizations have now applied for a generic top level domain name<\/a> (gTLD), it has been reported.<\/p>\n

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN<\/a>) reported a high level of interest in the new regime, which seeks to increase the number of web address extensions.<\/p>\n

At present, in addition to country codes, there are just 22 gTLDs such as .com, .edu and .net.<\/p>\n

ICANN is yet to disclose who any of the applicants are, or which domain name suffixes they have applied to operate, reports ZD.net.<\/p>\n

This information will not become available until after the 90-day application window for gTLDs closes on April 12th 2012.<\/p>\n

Organizations and businesses wishing to apply for a gTLD need to register with ICANN by March 29th, submit a completed application form and pay a $185,000 admin fee.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
