{"id":824,"date":"2011-04-19T12:57:02","date_gmt":"2011-04-19T16:57:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.domainandtrademark.com\/?p=824"},"modified":"2019-08-09T09:10:11","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T13:10:11","slug":"domain-name-disputes-on-the-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cscdbs.com\/blog\/domain-name-disputes-on-the-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Domain name disputes on the rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/domain-name-management.html\">Domain name<\/a> disputes are on the rise, with the number of such cases having increased by 24% last year, according figures from the U.S.-based National Arbitration Forum (FORUM).<\/p>\n<p>Data from FORUM, which is approved by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/domain-name-management.html\">ICANN<\/a>) to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/domain-name-management.html\">domain<\/a> dispute resolution services, show that it handled 2,177 cases in 2010, compared to 1,759 just a year earlier.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The business of registering and monetizing domain names continues to grow,&#8221; said Kristine Dorrain, FORUM&#8217;s Internet legal counsel. &#8220;As a result, it is inevitable that some percentage of those names will involve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/domain-recovery.html\">cybersquatting<\/a> and more cases than ever are being filed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Among the more high-profile cases handled by FORUM last year was a case involving the domain bradpittfoundation.org, which was won by the Hollywood actor. Other cases involved Mercedes and American Girl.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, it was reported that the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/trademark-searching.html\">trademark<\/a> protection applications filed through the World Intellectual Property Organization rose by 12.8% in 2010.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Domain name disputes are on the rise, with the number of such cases having increased by 24% last year, according figures from the U.S.-based National Arbitration Forum (FORUM).
