In this article\u2014the first in a series of two\u2014CSC\nlooks at domain registration trends related to holiday shopping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The concept of Singles Day (or Guanggun\nJie, literally \u201cSingle Sticks Holiday\u201d) began at Nanjing University in China in\nthe early 1990s, marking November 11 (11.11 or double-11) as the day of celebration.\nBut the commercial opportunities associated with the event were spotted in the\nlate 2000s<sup>[1]<\/sup>,\nwhen the Alibaba\u00ae marketplace starting using the date for its annual online\nsale in 2009<sup>[2]<\/sup>\nand then trademarked the term double-11 ( \u53cc\u5341\u4e00) in 2012<sup>[3]<\/sup>.\nSingles Day has subsequently grown to become <strong>the biggest shopping day<\/strong> in the world, with combined sales across\nAlibaba and JD.com alone totalling in excess of $44 billion in 2017<sup>[4]<\/sup>.\nThough the occasion continues to grow in prominence, it remains most popular in\nthe Far East, perhaps due to the coincidence of sharing the date with Veterans or\nRemembrance Day in the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S.\u2014and much of the western\nworld\u2014the period around Thanksgiving, on the fourth Thursday of November, has\nalso long been popular with shoppers. Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving,\nhas traditionally been regarded as the start of the Christmas shopping season\nin the U.S. More recently, the coining of the following Monday as Cyber Monday was\nintroduced, producing a four-day long weekend designed to encourage consumers\nto shop online. Online sales on Cyber Monday have grown year-on-year since\n2006, reaching almost $8 billion on 2018<sup>[5]<\/sup>.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The use of references to Singles Day,\nBlack Friday, and Cyber Monday as ways of promoting eCommerce, and increasing sales\nfor internet retailers, continues to remain common practice. Domains can be\nregistered by individuals for a number of different reasons\u2014in the context of\nSingles Day and the Thanksgiving weekend, domains can be used in the creation\nof event-specific eCommerce sites and to promote particular brands,\nmarketplaces, or products. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond this, the registration of domains\ncan be profitable even in cases where no live site is configured. In many\ncases, domain names, including high-relevance keywords, can be registered on\nspec, to see which examples generate significant volumes of web traffic. This\ntraffic can then be monetized by the site owner through the inclusion of\nsponsored advertisements (pay-per-click links) on the webpage. This practice alone\ncan be of particular concern to a brand owner if their brand name is used in\nthe domain name and the sponsored ads direct visitors to competitor sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this study, we consider domains with\nnames containing the strings 11(-)11<sup>[6]<\/sup>,\nblack(-)friday and cyber(-)monday (with optional hyphens in each case). The\ninformation is derived from domain name zone files, which are data files\ncontaining lists of registered domains, published by the registries responsible\nfor the operation of particular domain name extensions (top-level domains, or TLDs).\nZone files are available for the majority of generic TLDs (gTLDs such as .COM,\n.NET, etc.) new gTLDs, plus a selection of country-code TLDs (ccTLDs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The following statistics show the numbers of pre-existing domains already registered at the start of November 2019. <br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"619\" height=\"245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Table1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8325\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Table1.png 619w, https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Table1-300x119.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"619\" height=\"734\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Table2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8326\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Table2.png 619w, https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Table2-253x300.png 253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"879\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Table3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8327\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Table3.png 620w, https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Table3-212x300.png 212w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These statistics illustrate the scale of\ndomain name registrations relating to the November events, and the proportion\nof these domains, which\u2014on the basis of the associated keywords\u2014have presumably\nbeen registered to promote sites or attract traffic relating to eCommerce\nactivity. For the Black Friday and Cyber Monday domains, significant\nproportions (26.1% and 34.9%, respectively) feature keywords pertaining\nexplicitly to eCommerce. The share for 11.11 domains is rather smaller, due in\npart to the more generic nature of the string itself, and perhaps in part to\ntargeting the Far East audience with less reliance on English-language\nkeywords. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The TLD data shows that, although the\nmajority of these sites exist on common, familiar gTLDs such as .COM and .NET,\nother new gTLDs (e.g., .XYZ and .TOP), as well as ccTLDs (e.g., .UK and .DK)\nare also important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In cases where brand names are explicitly\nbeing used to promote competitor products or offer the sale of counterfeits,\nthis activity can be highly damaging to the brand owner, in terms of lost\nrevenue and reputation damage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>CSC recommends that brand owners carry\nout proactive monitoring for the registration of new domains relating to their\nbrands, which is particularly important at times of the year when eCommerce\nactivity is at a high. Monitoring should also take a holistic approach,\ncovering a wide range of relevant TLDs and keywords. Infringing domains can\npotentially be taken down via a range of enforcement processes.
