{"id":8538,"date":"2019-12-17T09:18:49","date_gmt":"2019-12-17T14:18:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/?p=8538"},"modified":"2019-12-17T09:18:51","modified_gmt":"2019-12-17T14:18:51","slug":"holiday-shopping-events-part-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cscdbs.com\/blog\/holiday-shopping-events-part-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Holiday Shopping Events\u201411.11, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday eCommerce Domain Trends: Part 2"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<i><br \/> By David Barnett<br \/> Brand Monitoring subject matter expert<\/i> <span style=\"padding-left:150px\">Share this post \n<a class=\"social\" id=\"linkedinShare\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/sharing\/share-offsite\/?url=\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/LinkedIn18x20.png\" style=\"padding-left:5px\"\/><\/a>\n<a class=\"social\" id=\"twitterShare\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intent\/tweet?url=\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Twitter18x20.png\"\/><\/a>\n<a class=\"social\" id=\"facebookShare\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/sharer\/sharer.php?u=\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Facebook18x20.png\"\/><\/a>\n<\/span>\n<hr \/>\n\n\n\n\n<p>This is the second in a two-part series of articles looking at domain registrations associated with the 11.11, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday shopping events, following the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/how-will-black-friday-ecommerce-domains-trend\/\">introductory post published in early November.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the shopping season, over a\nperiod between November 5 and December 8, we monitored the number of new domain\nregistrations with names containing the strings \u201c11(-)11,\u201d \u201cblack(-)friday,\u201d\nand \u201ccyber(-)monday\u201d (with optional hyphens in each case).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"619\" height=\"627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8543\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table1.png 619w, https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table1-296x300.png 296w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We observed considerable activity over\nthe five-week period, with significant increases in the numbers of domains\n(over 20%, in the case of Black Friday domains) compared to the total\npre-existing at the start of the study period. Registrations also peaked close\nto the actual day of the shopping events, especially for Singles Day and Black\nFriday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"619\" height=\"245\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8542\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table2.png 619w, https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table2-300x119.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 619px) 100vw, 619px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These data show that significant proportions\nof the Black Friday and Cyber Monday domains (20.5% and 31.5%, respectively)\nalso feature eCommerce-related keywords in their domain names, suggesting they\nhave been specifically registered to attract web traffic associated with internet\nusers interested in making online purchases across the period. In both cases,\nthe registration activity spanned an extended period of several weeks in the\nrun-up to the events, with the keywords \u201cdeal\u201d and \u201csale\u201d commonly used, as\nshown below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"894\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8541\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table3.png 620w, https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table3-208x300.png 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A smaller proportion of the 11.11\ndomains (under 5%) also feature English-language eCommerce keywords. Inspection\nof the domain names suggests that many of them may not even have been\nregistered with the 11.11 event in mind, and may simply be using \u201c1111\u201d as a\ngeneric string.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"618\" height=\"879\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8540\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table4.png 618w, https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2019\/12\/P2-Table4-211x300.png 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 618px) 100vw, 618px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Similar to the trends seen in the set of\npre-existing domains considered in the previous study, .COM continues to\naccount for the majority of new registrations in each of these three cases, though\nnew generic top-level domains, such as .XYZ, .SITE, and .ONLINE are also\nsignificant, accounting for notable proportions of the registrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Other\nobservations from the sets of newly registered domains<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to the domain names including\neCommerce-related keywords, many of the event-specific domains registered\nduring the monitoring period also include the names of known and trusted brands,\nas well as the names of online marketplaces. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While some of these may have been\nregistered by the brand owners to promote their own eCommerce holiday events, a\nsignificant proportion certainly were registered by third parties. These\nindividuals may be abusing the brand names to misdirect and monetize web\ntraffic, by diverting users to their own content via re-direction or sponsored\nadvertisements, or by offering the sale of counterfeit items. Amongst the brand\nnames seen to have been used in this way are: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>For 11.11:<\/strong> The eCommerce sites\nAliexpress, Tmall, JD, Suning, Gome and Pinduoduo, in addition to Bilibili (a\nChinese video sharing site themed around animation and games).<\/li><li><strong>For Black Friday:<\/strong> Amazon (including a\nrange of mis-spellings), eBay, Paypal, Walmart, Apple (and iPhone), Netflix,\nLouis Vuitton, Hermes, Dr. Martens, Ugg, Uber, Ford, Toyota, Jeep and Sonos.<\/li><li><strong>For Cyber Monday:<\/strong> Walmart and Ugg (as\nalso seen for the Black Friday domains), and Macy\u2019s.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s also a suggestion that some of\nthe 11(-)11 domains have been specifically registered with a Chinese-speaking\naudience in mind. These include examples making use of the keywords \u201cguanggunjie\u201d\n(the Chinese name for Singles Day), \u201cmai\u201d (the Chinese word for \u201cbuy\u201d or \u201csell,\u201d\ndepending on the intonation), and \u201cxianyu,\u201d the name of the Chinese-language sub-platform\non the Taobao marketplace offering the sale of used goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the identified sites appear to\nbe non-infringing, and resolve either to generic stand alone eCommerce sites,\nor content relating to the brand owner\u2019s own products or services. In these\ncases, the owners of the domains appear simply to be taking advantage of the\nbuzz surrounding the holiday shopping events to drive web traffic to their own\ncontent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other sites feature links to third-party\nsites, such as examples that aggregate marketplace listings, and then link\nthrough to the official marketplace, to generate affiliate revenue from visitor\nclicks. Other domains were found to resolve to coupon or deal sites. These examples\nmay also be of interest to brand owners, since it may be unclear whether the\noffer is being made by the referring site itself or by the brand in question.\nThere is also a risk that these sites may collect customer information for\ntheir own use before forwarding the user on the to the official brand website. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, a number of more egregious\ntypes of content were also identified. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sites offering the sale of\nbranded goods, which may be counterfeit. These examples may be particularly\nconcerning, and misleading to customers, if the domain name includes the name\nof the brand being infringed.<\/li><li>Domain names including the\nnames of trusted brands, but which resolve to unrelated third-party sites,\nwhich in many cases feature eCommerce-related content.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Key\ntakeaways<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Across the period surrounding the 11.11,\nBlack Friday, and Cyber Monday holiday shopping events, significant activity\nassociated with the registration of directly-relevant domain names was\nidentified. Much of this activity is legitimate, and the period does provide an\nopportunity for brand owners to take advantage of increased web traffic and\nevent-specific web searches by internet users to promote their own goods and\nservices. However, the increased activity also provides opportunities for\nunscrupulous infringers to abuse the names of trusted brands to drive visitors\nto their own content, or to sell counterfeit products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The findings highlight the importance\nfor brand owners not only to protect their intellectual properly <strong><em>defensively<\/em><\/strong>,\nthrough the registration of a strategic domain portfolio, but also to <strong><em>proactively<\/em><\/strong>\nmonitor for activity by third parties, to allow enforcement action to be taken\nas appropriate.
