{"id":860,"date":"2011-05-06T16:48:31","date_gmt":"2011-05-06T20:48:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.domainandtrademark.com\/?p=860"},"modified":"2019-08-09T09:09:54","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T13:09:54","slug":"non-latin-character-users-to-benefit-from-icanns-gtld-regime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cscdbs.com\/blog\/non-latin-character-users-to-benefit-from-icanns-gtld-regime\/","title":{"rendered":"Non-Latin character users &#8216;to benefit from ICANN&#8217;s gTLD regime&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The introduction of new generic top level domains (gTLDs) could make the Internet more accessible to a global audience, it has been suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Relaxing restrictions on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/domain-name-management.html\">domain name<\/a> suffixes could help make the web more accessible to individuals who use non-Latin characters, said Mei-Lan Stark, a member of the Board of Directors of the International <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/trademark-searching.html\">Trademark<\/a> Association.<\/p>\n<p>Stark said the plans, put forward by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/domain-name-management.html\">ICANN<\/a>), could help encourage greater online participation, but also carried security risks.<\/p>\n<p>Stark pointed to the difficulties and costs already associated with defending marks on the Internet due to multiple gTLDs.<\/p>\n<p>He suggested that websites could be set up in different countries using similar gTLDs, which could have the effect of confusing Internet users.<\/p>\n<p>The first non-Latin domain names, sanctioned by ICANN, went live in May 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Arabic speakers in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates became the first to take advantage of non-Latin scripts online, with Russian and Chinese languages sanctioned later in the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The introduction of new generic top level domains (gTLDs) could make the Internet more accessible to a global audience, it has been suggested.
