{"id":872,"date":"2011-05-11T09:46:53","date_gmt":"2011-05-11T13:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.domainandtrademark.com\/?p=872"},"modified":"2019-08-09T09:09:54","modified_gmt":"2019-08-09T13:09:54","slug":"nfl-outfit-wins-wipo-domain-name-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cscdbs.com\/blog\/nfl-outfit-wins-wipo-domain-name-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"NFL outfit wins WIPO domain name rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cleveland Browns have secured the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/domain-name-management.html\">domain name<\/a> browns.com, in a significant triumph for the American football franchise.<\/p>\n<p>The World Intellectual Property Organization&#8217;s (WIPO) Arbitration and Mediation Center ruled that the domain name must be transferred from an Italian cybersquatter who was in possession of the Web address.<\/p>\n<p>Back in March, the NFL outfit filed a complaint with WIPO, providing evidence of historic rights to the Browns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/trademark-searching.html\">trademark<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The domain name had been used in Italy to sell American Football merchandise and redirect online visitors to other teams&#8217; websites, hence the eagerness of the club to secure the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cscglobal.com\/global\/web\/csc\/domain-name-management.html\">domain<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>WIPO, in making its judgement, noted that the original registrant of the browns.com domain had been the respondent in 26 other domain name complaints, suggesting that they are a repeat cybersquatter.<\/p>\n<p>The Browns argued that the current owner had no rights to the Browns trademark and had no bona fide use for the domain name.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Cleveland Browns have secured the domain name browns.com, in a significant triumph for the American football franchise.
