This first article looks at the numbers of registered domains with names containing coronavirus-related strings\u2014\u201ccoronavirus\u201d or \u201ccovid(-)19\u201d (optional hyphen)\u2014and analyzes the types of content present on the associated websites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In our investigation, we found 6,341 domains containing the string \u2018covid(-)19\u2019, and 11,552 domains containing \u2018coronavirus\u2019<sup>[1]<\/sup>. Many of these registered domain names include other terms, implying that the associated websites feature neutral or informational content. However, significant numbers incorporate particular keywords suggesting that they could have been registered to take advantage of people\u2019s fears surrounding coronavirus to attract web traffic. This analysis shows that of the 2,000 plus domains for which creation dates were identifiable, only 17 domains (0.8%) were registered before 2020, and 68% (1,400+ domains) were registered since the start of March\u2014that\u2019s just two weeks prior to the date of analysis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Figure 1:<\/strong> Daily numbers of registrations of coronavirus-related domains featuring keywords of relevance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"610\" height=\"474\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cscdigitalbrand.services\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/ChartDBS.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8786\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2020\/03\/ChartDBS.jpg 610w, https:\/\/cscwebcontentstorage.blob.core.windows.net\/cscmarketing-cscdbs-media\/uploads\/2020\/03\/ChartDBS-300x233.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>N.B. We\ntruncated the graph at three days prior to the date of analysis, as there can\ntypically be a delay of around two to three days between the date of domain registration\nand its inclusion and detection in the published zone file. Accordingly, the\nnumbers of registrations shown for (at least) the two or three days prior to\nanalysis are likely to be underestimates. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8211;\n&#8211; &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These figures provide a striking\nillustration of how escalating real-world issues can produce a flurry of\ncorresponding activity online, with an enormous increase in registrations as countries\nbegan to announce lockdown measures throughout March. We can also see spikes in\nthe domain-registration graph associated with specific events:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The first announcements of the emergence of coronavirus outside China in late January<\/li><li>The WHO announcement of COVID-19 as the specific strain on February 11<\/li><li>The start of Italy\u2019s lockdown in late February<sup>[3]<\/sup><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s in a domain name?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 75% of the 2,646 domains with keywords of interest produced a live webpage response<sup>[4]<\/sup>. Around three-quarters of these currently don\u2019t point to an active site, i.e., no page title, or a title suggesting that only a holding page is present. That said, even these may have been registered with a goal of monetizing the domain name, either through pay-per-click links on the site or explicitly offering the domain name for sale. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting aside inactive domains still\nleaves around 500 coronavirus-related domains featuring relevant keywords and appearing\nto host active websites. Thirty-two of that 500 achieve significant web\ntraffic, attracting over 8,000 internet users daily between them. The websites\nresolve to a range of content, although just over a third resolve to active eCommerce\nsites offering face masks for sale. This provides\na range of opportunities for any would-be infringer and, as our findings have\nshown, can pose a variety of risks for internet users. Where physical products\nare being sold, the items could be manufactured using sub-standard materials,\nor without rigorous quality checks. Consumers run the risk that products may\nnot just be ineffective, but actually harmful. Many of the identified eCommerce\nsites offered products using known and trusted brand names. The risk of these\nbeing counterfeit is one reason why brand owners should pay close attention to\nthe developing landscape, and take appropriate enforcement action to protect\ntheir customers and their reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The\nsocial risks of misinformation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Where unofficial sites use the name or branding\nof a legitimate health organisation (e.g., CDC or WHO) to appear official or\nlend credibility to its content, the public is at risk of incorrect safety information\nor a phishing attack. <strong>Stay tuned for a post\nfrom us on COVID-19 phishing attack opportunities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Figure 3:<\/strong> An example of a site infringing on CDC and WHO branding. CSC\u2019s monitoring technology is\nable to search for brand-related appearances across a range of internet content\ntypes, and prioritize findings by the number and prominence of brand mentions,\nand their proximity to keywords or key phrases of particular relevance or\nconcern. Following identification of infringing content, a rapid process of\nenforcement for the removal of damaging content can help to protect customers,\ncompany reputation, and revenue.
