The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is expected to decide this week whether the creation of a .xxx top level domain name for adult content is a justifiable move.
ICANN is under increasing pressure from national governments to take into account their demands when making key structure decisions about Internet infrastructure — including the creation of new top level domain names.
At its San Francisco meeting today, the organization is expected to bring the .xxx top-level domain name issue to a close — four years after it first considered the introduction of the Web suffix.
The controversial top level domain name is opposed by both the Government Advisory Committee and The Free Speech Coalition, an association of representatives from the adult industry.
The latter claims that the introduction of .xxx domain names will result in costing adult content distributors millions in unnecessary fees.
ICANN delayed the introduction of .xxx at its 39th meeting in Cartagena at the end of last year.
