40% of US employers view social media as an advantage

Some 40 per cent of employers in the US see social media use both inside and outside the office as an advantage.

Research by law firm Proskauer Rose also found that more than three-quarters of respondents are now using social media for business purposes.

The findings highlights how important it is for companies to develop corporate best practices to make sure the medium is used in the right manner.

Daniel Ornstein, London Partner and co-head of the firm’s International Labor and Employment Law Group, said: “As social media use continues to grow exponentially, it’s raising a thicket of thorny legal issues for employers.”

For one, companies have to make sure they secure social media names, as this will mean they are covered for any trademark, legal and brand reputation challenges.

Clear, express and well-communicated policies also have to be developed, so that employees understand the extent to which they will be monitored.
