Trademark applications soar as Chinese economy booms

Economic growth in China has seen a surge in the number of trademark applications filed by individuals and businesses, it has been reported.

The nation became the sixth largest applicant for international trademarks in 2010, with a total of 1,928 requests made during the course of the year, reports China Daily.

In total, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) received 39,687 trademarks applications, but a greater share of these came from China than ever before.

The country saw a 42.2 per cent increase in the number of international trademarks, the second fastest rise following South Korea.

WIPO deputy director general Wang Binying explained that as China has embraced the wider business world, it has become very active in terms of patents and trademarks.

He suggested that the Chinese government has made substantial progress in intellectual property rights protection in recent times.

WIPO reported that more than 1.4 million domestic trademark applications have been made in China so far this year.
