US grants trademark for Dragon fruit

Binh Thuan dragon fruit has received a Certificate of Trademark from the United States Patent and Trademark Office, it has been reported.

Bui Dang Hung, chairman of the Binh Thuan Dragon Fruit Association, announced that his organization’s application has been successful.

The certified trademark includes the words ‘Binh Thua’ and ‘Dragon fruit’, and also the Asian fruit’s image.

Under US trademark law, the certificate will be valid for ten years, starting from the application date on December 14, 2009.

The organization will also have the option of extending the trademark for ten years at a time.

Speaking to Vietnam News, Mr. Hung said it was “important” to protect the fruit’s brand and image in the large US market.

He said the intellectual property should help raise awareness of Dragon fruit – which is also known as Pitaya – in North America.
