One in Five DNS Records are Susceptible to Subdomain Hijacking

CSC’s latest report found that over 21% of DNS records point to content that does not resolve; thus, leaving many companies vulnerable to subdomain hijacking. Additionally, over 63% show error status codes such as “404 not found” or “502 bad gateway.” Digital records accumulate over time, and administrators who may be unaware of each domain’s history are hesitant to delete legacy records in case they’re tied to critical infrastructure. This buildup of inactive zones not pointing to content (dangling DNS) are at risk of subdomain hijacking.

DNS tunneling is a pervasive threat that enables hackers to get any data in and out of a company's internal network while bypassing most firewalls. The DNS translates numeric internet protocol addresses that browsers can then use to load web pages — threat actors use tunneling to exploit this process and steal data by hiding it inside DNS traffic. DNS tunneling essentially smuggles hostile traffic through DNS ports, making these attacks difficult to detect and mitigate.
